pour some sugar on me

This weekend I was having brunch with an Indian girlfriend of mine, dreading my impending bikini wax that afternoon - when she tells me she “sugars”. After a little “pour some sugar on me” we all tuned in to what she had to say. This model-turned doctor is one of my most well-informed beauty confidantes, and she strongly advocates this method for sensitive skin types like hers.

Sugaring - also referred to as “Persian Hair Removal”, is an ancient Egyptian practice made from all-natural ingredients to remove the hair follicle from the root. Similar to waxing, sugaring is the perfect solution for sensitive skin, because the there are no artificial ingredients that could possibly irritate the skin.

There are a few different types of “sugaring” on the market – the traditional method is the one with paste, which is the ideal since it’s more gentle. Some salons use a combination of sugar and wax or gel and advertise it as sugaring, but it isn’t the same. If you have sensitive skin, be sure to ask whether the paste is pure and wax-free. It can be difficult to find a professional that does the sugaring with the paste, but it’s worth it if you have trouble waxing.

How does it work?

With the traditional sugar paste method, the warm paste applied first in the opposite direction of hair growth and then in the direction of hair growth using the hands. It's then flicked off in the in the direction of hair growth. It is completely safe to apply repetitively over recently sugared skin to grab missed hairs and can be done in large sections. She reports that her hairs are finer and lighter than before she began sugaring – and her skin noticeable softer and smoother.

Upon doing some research, I found that if you’re on a budget, you can  make your own at home, however reviews suggest that it’s difficult to find the right consistency. Quite frankly it takes a certain kind of woman to be able to her OWN waxing. It is less painful than regular wax, but let’s be real here you’re still pulling your hair out from the root! Things could get sticky if you get my drift. It is much cheaper though – sugaring is slightly more expensive than waxing, ranging from $65-$85 for a full Brazilian.

If you live in the Manhattan area, there is a salon in Union Square that offers the traditional paste method and comes highly recommended. They occasionally offer discounts and specials at well. If their prices are a little high, they have been known to offer a 50% off Bikini Area Sugaring specials on YipIt.com

Blinded by those headlights

Thank all of the sheer tops in the prefall Valentino collection for this post about dimmers. "Dimmers", also known as breast petals, are round shaped covers fashion models use to cover our nipples with minimum coverage, We've been using plenty of them to avoid shocking the poor buyers into distraction. With silk shirts on trend, this isn't the only client I'm going to need these for. Definitely a must-have for the model bag this season.

They're also of use in your daily life for situations like headlights through thin shirts in the summer or if you're wearing a lacy bra under a sheer shirt. Hollywood (the makers of fashion tape) also offer an adhesive lifting cup if you're feeling a little too saggy without any support underneath.

Most brands are shaped like flower petals but I've seen discs and butterflies as well. They sell silicone options that you can reuse but honestly go for the disposable ones - they're cheaper and more
adhesive. The silicone tends to make an odd shape and is a little heavy, where the paper petals are completely weightless.

Petals are not meant to replace a bra, they are only meant to cover your nipple. If you need a bra for support, please wear one. no one wants to watch your boobs giggle down the street. So you can stop worrying about "headlights" poking through your silks. Unless you're into that.

These are the best I've found. Available online for around $10.

Insider Tip: Camouflage

When you love fashion, your first priority isn't always practical. One of my stylish girlfriends just bought a pair of vintage high waisted Ralph Lauren peg leg pants in white satin. It was love at first sight, and she bought them because they were reasonably priced. They're absolutely beautiful, the only problem was that the seams from her everyday nude underwear showed through the thin fabric every time she sat. Not a good look!

Being the true friend I am, after admiring her new find I complimented her on the white piping peeking through her pants. She had a moment of shock and recognition, then we had a long debate as to whether commando was an option. We concluded that considering the fabric of the silk pants make that a no go. What she needed were some MySkins.

I wear MySkins almost five days a week because they are completely seamless, and they offer twenty different colors like "peaches" and "chocolate" to blend perfectly with your individual skin tone. Many of the outfits I find myself wearing in the showroom are samples. Due to time and budget constraints, many designers choose not to put lining in their samples. So it's important come prepared to provide the illusion of the finished product while remaining covered.

These underwear are an absolute essential in my bag. The brand has many options for women with ethnic skin tones as well, which not available from popular brands like Commando or Cosabella. MySkins are only $12 each - so you can try a few tones until you find your closest match. So see what they have to offer! www.myskins.com

I am a tried and true fan of their thongs, they also offer bras and other panty shapes as well. Let me know what you think!

Tis the season for a DIET

So you found the perfect New Years dress during all the Christmas sample sales, but now that you've been home stuffing your face for a week, you can't zip it and breathe simultaneously. Happens to us all. While many girls resort to what we commonly call "juicing"- I for some reason can not handle the thought of not chewing my food for four to seven days. My personal preference is to eat high quantities of low calorie foods that make you feel fuller, but are easily digested. This way you never feel hungry (read: grouchy). The science behind this diet is that the fiber in these foods fool your body into feeling fuller, while helping to rid your body of undigested fats.

Now that you're back to reality, late nights and busy schedules can sabotage your plans to start your diet - you find yourself starving and exhausted by the time you get home and don't have the energy. These are the times when you just want to take a bath and order in. Go ahead, relax. Call up your favorite greasy Chinese place and order Moo Shoo. It cures the craving but consists mostly of cabbage, which expands in your stomach and is highly water-based. This is my go-to when I am used to eating high quantities and have to trick myself into diet mode. Chicken or any kind of seafood are the leanest meat options.

So now that you're back to sanity, let's get down to grocery list specifics. We'll talk breakfast first. This is your most important meal of the day, because it gets your metabolism working early and keeps you from over-snacking later on in the day. Oatmeal and flax cereals are great filler foods that you can individualize every day to keep yourself from getting bored. One cup of any of these and you're good until lunch. Bananas, blueberries, honey, savory oats, the opportunities are endless. If you're into grits, you can get the irish oatmeal and they become a similar texture. Just don't put all the cheese and butter in them. If you love that buttery texture, go for a vegetable spread like Smart Balance. I shy away from most dairy products since they're the highest in saturated fat- with the exception of yogurts like Activia Light, which is one of my favorite snacks under 100 calories. You can also eat Activia as a parfait with fruits and wheat germ, giving you the sweet from the fruit without granola's high sugar content.

For lunch, I prefer a soup or a big salad. Just make sure there's nothing fried or cheesy involved. Sometimes dressings have cream in them - namely ranch and thousand island. Go for a vinaigrette - balsamic is tasty and anything with lemon helps to boost your metabolism.

If you've eaten an entire pecan pie in the past week and can't even zip your dress up right now, get a juice for lunch. I know what you're thinking: juices are disgusting. But they don't have to be. Choose a juice with a sweet base ingredient, like apple, a simple carb like carrot or beet, and sneak in a green. The easiest to tolerate is spinach because it doesn't have much flavor. I also like ginger in my juices- it gives it a kick and boosts your metabolism and energy level. (It also helps with the earthy taste of the beet) If you choose to juice for lunch, it's important that you give yourself a snack around 4:00. Otherwise you won't be able to make a smart decision by the time dinner rolls around.

This time of year, homemade soups are my favorite way to go. If your boyfriend/roommate/husband is used to home cooked meals, this is a smooth transition for them. If you don't have time to make soup, don't substitute store-bought soup. The sodium will bloat you and let's face it - canned soup is nasty. If you like the warm and comforting feeling of soups in the wintertime, make it yourself using low-sodium chicken broth, and save yourself some money by eating it for lunch the next few days. This is especially convenient for the working woman, just bring it to work! Remember, no cream girls! If the recipe calls for cream, substitute it with cream of chicken soup. It's 99% fat free and adds a delicious flavor to your soup.

If you're going out to dinner, do it tapas style. Mediterranean, sushi, and tapas are my all-time dinner favorites. They're the easiest menus to navigate on a diet. The main focus at dinner is to keep portions small, and to lean towards foods that digest quickly to give your metabolism time to digest them before you go to sleep. Hummus, cucumber salads, etc will make you feel full without packing on the pounds. The downfall with dips at restaurants are the huge basket of chips or pita that come along with it. It takes hours for your body to digest all of that! Carrots or cucumbers are the best option. If you're more moderate with your diet, ask for whole wheat pita. Whole grains have more a fibrous response in the body, making them easier to digest. Rice and quinoa are lesser evils of the carbohydrate family, since they have more fiber than most, which is why sushi is acceptable. No soy sauce, go for the ginger!

This is a pretty slim menu - I'll be the first to admit that I have those days when I get home and am positively ravenous. This is when I have my snack. If you love chips as much as I do, you can find a low calorie alternative in your grocery store isle to dip in your hummus and tabouleh at home. I like Pretzel Crisps and Pop Chips. Pop chips are low calorie rice chips with awesome flavors like sour cream and onion and barbeque. They're never fried, and always easy to find. I sometimes eat a singles pack of them as my snack or the Sabra packs of hummus.

I've given you plenty of real-life options that you should be able to apply to your life and see results. Remember, we don't want for you to lose any friends on this diet, only pounds. There's no reason to deprive your body of nutrients when it asks you for them. Just be sure to make good choices that will satisfy your body's needs. Don't forget to be active every day and drink LOTS OF WATER!! It keeps the process moving, to put it lightly. No one wants to stand next to the stinky girl at your fabulous New Years party! Follow this diet along with a solid cardio regimen, and you'll be loving that dress again before you know it!

Happy New Year ladies!

Navy Nails

Something new and different!

As a rule, we are always expected to have a "natural-looking" nude manicure and pedicure. Not this week.

As an ode to how popular navy has become, my evening wear client has requested our nails to be "Russian Navy" by OPI.

I'm ecstatic!

Showroom secret: the perfect bun

Most showrooms in the city request that "hair is pulled back in a sleek chignon" - an impossible feat through a day of constantly changing clothes. Girls, you know what I'm talking about.

I finally got tired of having to attack my head with hairspray and pins to keep my flyaways at bay and instead reached for "sock bun" method. I've noticed girls sticking a sock on the top of their heads and smoothing the long parts of their hair over it, creating a PERFECTLY smooth donut-shaped bun. As I watched, their hair never wavered- ALL DAY long.

I admit that I laughed at first, then proceeded to finding it ridiculous and somewhat uncleanly to put a sock on the top your head, but none of these girls ever had a hair out of place! This is because the longest pieces of your hair are on the outside, keeping any layers of rebellious locks tucked neatly away. Exactly what I've been trying to do!!

So when I saw the new Conair Perfect Bun Maker for $5 in Walgreens, I pounced. They're super light, and offer a few different sizes. I went for a smaller one since I was going for subtle, but the more hair you have, the bigger size you will need. They also include a hair elastic and four bobby pins in the box, which is super exciting.

I was doing this for an evening wear client, so I went for an elegant look starting with a low ponytail on the nape of the neck. The directions are to pull the ring up to the top of your ponytail and wrap your hair around it, but I have too much hair, so i started at the tip of my ponytail and rolled the donut towards my head, then pinned it into place.

Survey says: It's been so much easier to maintain - I haven't had to fix my hair once! Highly recommended ladies!
